In 2025, our journalism again made a strong contribution to the social debate through in-depth, multifaceted reporting. We informed and moved people, and that didn’t go unnoticed: several titles and colleagues were awarded prestigious prizes in a variety of disciplines.

The 3 northern dailies have been running a joint readers’ campaign since the start of the war: Help Ukraine Now! Readers donated over €1.7 million over 3 years, which has been used to buy medicine and food, acquire ambulances and a fire engine and repair or rebuild homes. Part of the money also goes to Voices of Children in Kyiv, which helps traumatised children. The campaign was initiated by reporter Patrick van ’t Haar, who regularly travels to Ukraine, takes aid with him and uses his reports to show where the money goes.

Valère, the partner of Veerle Duflou, chose to donate his body to science. Ten years after his death, Veerle wants to know what happens to those bodies. She visits the anatomy lab at the University of Antwerp and follows the people who receive donated bodies. The resulting five-part podcast was a series on the border of life and death, human interest and science.

Since the Gaza incursion, Israeli soldiers have frequently shared photos and videos on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook. For six months, Georgia Oost followed dozens of soldiers who posted their trophy photos and videos from the Gaza Strip. She verified the images, showing how they could provide evidence for the destruction of Gaza.

Romy had spent four years convincing people that her suffering was unbearable and death was the only way out. Yet at the very last minute, she decided against euthanasia. Journalist Stephanie Bakker spoke to her some 40 times in a year and a half. The story of Romy, who chose not to be anonymous when sharing her story, not only gave hope but also laid bare the problems in the mental health system and the dilemmas around euthanasia in young people.

Dunya, an Afghan woman who lives in Flanders, fled her family in fear of honour killing and in search of another life. The four-part podcast series by Debbie De Ridder and Nieuwsblad was the winner of De Grote PodCasting award.

NRC’s Carola Houtekamer and Karlijn Kuijpers discovered that ships from the Russian “shadow fleet” refuel in the western Scheldt before continuing to transport crude oil across the oceans. Their investigation not only exposed a loophole and security risk, but also led to enhanced inspections by the Environment and Transport Inspectorate.

Offlimits is a private foundation set up by the Dutch hosting industry to clean up the heavily polluted Dutch internet. NRC worked with filmmakers Jaap van Heusden and Jefta Varwijk.

The report uncovered a pollution scandal in Beverwijk’s Aagtenpark, right next to a residential area. The reporters also revealed how the municipality systematically tried to cover up this environmental pollution. It was the first journalistic production to show how dangerous and polluting the use of steel slag is.
